| A baby parrotlet will bond to the person who cares for it – not the person who hand-feeds it as a baby. Within days of getting your baby bird home, she or he will bond to you and make a fantastic companion. As babies, all of our birds are fed a high quality hand-feeding formula using sterilized syringes. We never use feeding tubes, as they are dangerous, and do not promote crucial socialization that will make the bird a perfect pet later on in life. We want them to be perfectly comfortable being around – and interacting with – humans. Once each baby has been fed individually, they are returned to their temperature- and humidity-controlled brooder, which is scrubbed and disinfected daily. When the babies are close to being fully-feathered, they are offered millet, weaning pellets, seed, fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as egg food. A baby parrotlet that has been exposed to a variety of foods early on will be a less picky eater later. The goal is to produce parrotlets that will accept a variety of foods once in their new home, and have their nutritional needs met. Is the Sex of a Parrotlet Important? - Not really, no. The main sex difference with parrotlets is visual - males have cobalt blue on their flight and tail feathers, whereas females do not (see the Pictures pages). A parrotlet of either sex will return the affection it is given. |
